Liposomal Chemotherapeutics

Christian CELIA (Università degli Studi "G. D'Annunzio" di Chieti-Pescara)

During the last few decades large strides have been made in nanomedicine and a first generation of liposomal chemotherapeutics have already made it to the market. The great potential of nanomedicine largely stems from its multidisciplinary nature, where the fields of medicine, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and engineering are integrated. By combining the knowledge of all these fields liposomal chemotherapeutics can be designed for the treatment of a variety of diseases. Liposomal chemotherapeutics provide several advantages over conventional drugs, such as increasing the circulation time, improving drug accumulation in the target region and decreasing side effects. Recently, several liposomal chemotherapeutics were synthesized and nanotherapeutics showing multiple efficacies were developed to treat different pathologies, particularly cancer. In this scenario, liposomal chemotherapeutics advanced as the new therapeutic perspective in nanomedicines.

This topic will discuss the impact of liposomal chemotherapeutics in nanomedicine. In particular, a summary of therapeutic applications and future perspectives of different systems were presented.
