New biosensing strategies on planar and structured photonic crystals

Abstract:
In an attempt to improve the performances of plasmon-based biosensing schemes, the use of photonic crystals (1DPCs) offers the advantage of low losses, strong field intensity enhancement, high resonance quality factors, and the absence of fluorescence quenching. Recently, surface modes on 1DPC have been used for demonstrating label-free detection based on spectral/angular resonance shift , or to improve fluorescence-based detection. To this extent, 1DPCs represent a powerful platform combining most of the sensing possibilities offered by conventional SPR and photonic-crystal based fluorescence detection.
This talk presents an overview on our last results in photonic- crystal assisted biosensing. More specifically, enhanced fluorescence detection will be demonstrated for micro-RNA and antigene detection, while the Ang-1 tumoral biomarker is shown to be sensed in a label-free configuration.
