He was born in Rome, in December 17, 1945.
He is Professor of Structural Mechanics from 1986.
He was the Coordinator of the Ph.D. Course in Structural Engineering from (1988-2002) at "La Sapienza" Rome University.
He was Head of Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering at "La Sapienza" Rome University from 1998 to 2007.
He is Dean of the Faculty of Engineering ("La Sapienza" Rome University)
He is Director of the International Master in Analysis and Control of Vibrations in Civil and Industrial Applications (2003- ).
He is a Member of  the Evaluation Council of "La Sapienza" Rome University from 2006.
He is a Member of the Administration Council of "La Sapienza" Rome University from 2006.
He has been a member of the following Editorial Boards :
Meccanica (1992-96), International Journal on Inverse Problems (1997-98), Journal of Structural Control (1998-2001), Journal of Vibration and Control, (1998- ), International Journal of Non-linear Mechanics (1999-), Acta Mechanica (2007-).
He is a Member of the EUROMECH Nonlinear Oscillations Conference Committee for 2003-2008.
He is a referee of international journals in structural mechanics and has been Guest Editor of Special Issues of Journal of Vibration and Control and International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics.
He has given lectures and seminars at several universities, he was a member of scientific committees of national and international conferences, he has organized symposia within international congresses, courses and seminars at the University of Rome. He is involved in many international bilateral projects.
He was Coordinator of several national CNR (Italian Scientific Council) and MURST Programmes on Dynamic Response of Structures under ambient and human excitations (1988-).
He is author and co-author of more than 150 papers (1972-) published in international and national journals and conferences on different items of applied mechanics and structural engineering.
The research activity is mainly located in the area of structural dynamics, however, three principal themes can be recognized: hysteretic systems, modelling of flexible systems undergoing large-amplitude motions, structural identification and damage detection.
He is involved in consulting activities with public and private companies, concerning experimental studies on dynamic and static behaviour of structural elements, buildings, bridges and monuments, structural health monitoring projects, analysis of complex structures.
