Diego MANFREDI
(Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Center for Space Human Robotics)

Diego Manfredi (MSc 2003 in Materials Engineering, PhD 2008 in Materials Science and Technology, both at Politecnico di Torino) is a researcher of the Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing (AM/3DP) research line of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT). From January 2008, he worked with a 2-year post-doc fellowship in Materials Science and Chemical Engineering Department at Politecnico di Torino on Metal Matrix Composites and alloys for aerospace applications. In October 2009 he hold lectures for the course Materials for Cutting Tools in the module Materials for Precision Manufacturing, as Invited Professor at SUPSI (Scuola Universitaria Professionale della Svizzera Italiana) in Manno.

Since January 2010 he joined IIT in the Center for Space Human Robotics settled in Torino. His research activity is now focused on lightweight structural components designed to be produced through AM and, more specifically, through Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technique. This approach permits to extend significantly the freedom of design and manufacture by allowing, for example, to create an object with desired shape and internal structure in a single fabrication step. The design of the part can be tailored to meet specific functions and properties (e.g. physical, mechanical, chemical, biological, etc.) using different and custom developed materials, like light metal alloys and composites, or high-temperature superalloys. He is author and/or co-author of 3 book chapters, 1 patent, ~30 papers in international journals and ~40 communications to national and international scientific conferences.
