Surface Engineering methods for conferring flame retardant properties and thermal protection to textiles
Giulio MALUCELLI (Politecnico di Torino)
This talk is aimed at describing such surface engineering approaches as layer by layer and nanoparticle absorption, which have turned out to efficiently provide flame retardant properties to both natural and synthetic fabrics. These methods exploit the peculiar features of different nanoparticles that can be assembled on the surface of fabric substrates, giving rise to a ceramic protective layer. The role of different types of nanoparticles on the fire behavior of the underlying textiles will be presented; some examples of fully inorganic, hybrid or organic layer by layer assemblies will be discussed as well.
