Annarita STRINGARO
(Istituto Superiore di Sanità)

Since 1992, Dr. Stringaro has been carrying out her research activity in the Department of Technology and Health of Italian National Institute of Health, in Rome. She performs her studies by using principally morphological, ultrastructural, cytofluorimetric and immunocytochemical methods. She investigates the mechanisms of action at subcellular level of antitumoral and antimicrobial agents, the mechanisms underlying the multidrug resistance phenomenon and, finally, the chemosensitizing effects of natural products on drug resistant tumor cells and isolated micro-organisms. More recently, she is studying the interaction of nano-microparticles with isolated microorganisms and cultured drug-resistant tumor cells.

This research is focused in the production of polymeric nano-microcarriers, useful to  encapsulate both hydrophobic and hydrophilic therapeutic agents. The realization of injectable reservoirs for controlled release (e.g., natural products loaded in nano-microparticles) may provide a strategy for the administration of chemical drugs with poor solubility. The main aim is the formulation of new treatment methods for diagnosis, therapy and theranostics. Dr. Stringaro coordinates and collaborates to several research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Health or other European institutions. She is  author of 70 articles in peer-reviewed national and international journals.
