(Istituto Superiore di Sanità)
Dr Federica Aureli graduated in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 2004. She took her PhD in “Experimental, Environmental and Occupationl Toxicology” at the “University of Messina” in 2009. From 2004 to 2006 she collaborated with the Organic Section of Community Reference Laboratory for Residues. Since 2006 she has been working as a scientist for the Department of Food Safety and Veterinary Public Health of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. Her research is focused on the risk assessment of trace elements and nanomaterials in food and feed.
Main topics include: (i) Analytical detection and risk assessment of NMs in food with special emphasis on the characterization of engineered NMs and analytical detection of metal/oxide nanoparticles in food and biological samples using state-of-the-art techniques such as single particle-ICP-MS and AF4-UV-MALS-ICP-MS; (ii) Food nanotoxicological studies such as those on the reproductive and endocrine toxicity of titania nanoparticles following oral administration, oral toxicity of pyrogenic SAS, and the intravenous and oral toxicity of nanosilver; (iii) Speciation and bioaccessibility of both essential and potentially toxic TEs in feed and food, using hyphenated techniques with ICP-MS detection (e.g. HPLC-ICP-MS) in tandem with molecular mass spectrometry as the analytical tools, namely speciation of arsenic, selenium and vanadium in the food chain for assessing their biological effects.
