Abstract:
One hundred years ago, Paul Ehrlich, the founder of chemotherapy, received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. His postulate of creating ‘magic bullets’ for use in the fight against human diseases inspired generations of scientists to devise powerful molecular imaging agents and therapeutics. After the use of various synthetic polymers, natural polysaccharides have received a lot of attention in the biomedical field thanks to their biological properties and to recent progresses in polysaccharide chemistry and nanotechnologies. These new dedicated nanosystems may be designed to fight atherothrombotic pathology, which remains the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the industrialized world. The presentation will intend to provide an overview on polysaccharide-based nanosystems as drug delivery systems and targeted contrast agents for molecular imaging with an emphasis on the treatment and imaging of cardiovascular pathologies.
